In the village of Velachery, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu, India, the main source of income is through the weaving of traditional silk saris by the males of the families. Due to the means of production, nearly three metres of remnant yarns are left over from each sari. This PhD research aims to develop a handknitting yarn using these silk remnants blended with lambswool. The blending creates beautiful and unique yarn colours, with excellent handle and knit-ability. The yarn could be produced by the women of the village within a cooperative system, providing a source of income and a means of empowerment.
