Design and sustainable development in the craft industry: a case study in Upper Northern Thailand

Disaya Chudasri, Lancaster University

Although Thailand has a long-standing tradition of elaborate ceremonies and ornate arts and crafts, for the past twenty years the craft industry has been unstable. This PhD project is exploring the research question: “How can design based on principles of sustainability be applied in the craft sector in order to contribute to the future economic security of craft producers in ways that are also socially and environmentally sound?” Employing design management principles and practice-based research approaches, the project as a whole will eventually lead to a set of criteria for design, craft-design methods, and tools.
